At its core, online learning can be tricky. The main elements of traditional live learning, lectures and tests, don’t translate entirely well to an online setting. Students generally attend lectures to learn the material, take tests to measure knowledge, and then receive a degree as certification of their education. altMBA, an online alternative MBA program founded by Seth Godin, takes online learning in the opposite direction by omitting lectures and tests altogether and focusing on learning through experiences. altMBA students learn in small cohorts, review their peers’ work, and turn peer feedback into “reflective scripts” to aid their growth. Coaches also lead the workshops and engage with students on both individual and group levels. Godin focuses on enrollment over compliance and experiences over lectures, and aims to transform “a new generation of online learning.” Peer interaction, self-reflection, and coaching? We think we’ve found a new kindred spirit.
