Angela Duckworth, author of “Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance,” was skeptical about the notion that “practice makes perfect.” So she asked Anders Ericsson, a professor of psychology at FSU and expert on expertise. Duckworth said, “I’ve been running for years, but I could set the clocks by my run times. I never get any faster!” Ericsson asked her if she had ever tried to run faster, to which Duckworth responded with, “Well … actually, no.”
